Design and installation guide
Protein foam: a resilient blanket approach for suitable liquid surfaces
Protein concentrates use protein-hydrolysate-based formulations to form a foam blanket. On suitable hydrocarbon fires, the layer covers the fuel surface to help limit vapour release and support resistance to reignition.
This family is assessed separately from fluoroprotein and film-forming fluoroprotein. Blanket structure, aspiration and application influence selection. The protein designation does not establish identical ratings, environmental properties or polar-solvent suitability across products.
01
How does the foam form and provide protection?
Concentrate chemistry, proportioning with water and application method together determine foam behaviour.
Protein-based structure
Protein hydrolysate and other formulation ingredients support foam formation with water and air. The formulation influences drainage and blanket behaviour, assessed through testing of the selected model.
Aspiration and blanket formation
Suitable aspirating hardware converts solution into finished foam. Controlled application supports blanket integrity at the fuel surface. A water-only nozzle is not assumed to produce the same foam structure.
Heat and burnback behaviour
The blanket contributes cooling and vapour control through its water content. Heat stability and burnback resistance follow product evidence, rather than a universal claim that the protein family outperforms all other foams.

Selection, hardware and product condition
Combustible material, product documentation and installed hardware are assessed together for appropriate selection.
Fuel and concentration
- Fuel compatibility
- Hydrocarbon properties and application conditions are established. Water-miscible solvents require a fuel-validated alcohol-resistant option rather than standard protein foam. Hot fuels and specialist mixtures need separate assessment.
- Model concentration
- Concentration and application density follow the selected product data. Concentrate quantity is calculated from solution flow and protection duration. Proportioner settings are not copied from another protein product.
Proportioning and discharge equipment
- Tank and spill applications
- Chambers, branchpipes and suitable monitors are matched to model performance scope. Application considers limiting fuel pickup. Protein designation alone does not establish suitability for subsurface injection.
- Proportioning and water
- Water type, viscosity and flow range are checked with the proportioner. Foam quality depends on aspiration and outlet conditions as well as formulation, with site verification where required.
Storage, documentation and environment
- Preserving concentrate condition
- Storage temperature and tank materials follow manufacturer instructions. Evaporation, dilution and contamination are controlled, with batch identification and sample checks recorded. Different concentrates are not mixed without documented compatibility.
- Protein designation and environmental evidence
- A protein base alone does not prove fluorine-free formulation, low toxicity or a particular biodegradability result. Formulation and SDS are checked. Used foam, fuel-contaminated water and residues require an appropriate collection plan.
03
Applications and selection approach
The actual fuel, site conditions and validated scope of the selected model govern the following applications.
Hydrocarbon tank areas
- Application need
- Fuel surface and appropriate blanket delivery are established.
- Selection approach
- Fuel, product and tank discharge device are assessed together.
Spill protection
- Application need
- A sustained blanket is needed over the liquid surface.
- Selection approach
- Aspiration, gentle application and required density are matched to the model.
Existing foam systems
- Application need
- Existing concentrate and equipment condition are checked.
- Selection approach
- Agent changes, tank materials and alternative-family suitability are considered together.

| Environment | Formulation- and document-specific properties. | SDS, fluorinated ingredients and after-use handling. |
A family description does not certify identical performance across manufacturers. Model values and approved application conditions are matched to current product data and the relevant documentation.
Share the combustible material, water supply and existing equipment so we can assess a suitable concentrate and application arrangement together.
